Cloak and Dagger (1984)

Cloak & Dagger (1984) is an American spy-adventure thriller directed by Richard Franklin and starring Henry Thomas, Dabney Coleman, and Michael Murphy. The story follows 11-year-old Davey Osborne, a lonely boy who escapes into video games and spy fantasies after the death of his mother and his difficulty communicating with his father. Davey’s imaginary hero is Jack Flack, a secret agent who looks like an idealized version of his father. His fantasy suddenly becomes reality when Davey witnesses a murder and receives a video-game cartridge containing top-secret military information. When adults refuse to believe him, Davey and his friend Kim are forced to evade the people who want to recover the cartridge.

The film combines childhood imagination with genuine danger, deliberately blurring the boundary between Davey’s fantasy world and reality. As he is pursued through San Antonio, Davey increasingly has to rely on himself rather than on the fictional Jack Flack. The relationship between Davey and his father gradually becomes central to the story, culminating in Davey recognizing that his real father—not his imaginary hero—is the person he can depend on. The film was based on Cornell Woolrich’s story “The Boy Cried Murder” and was also notable for making an Atari video game a crucial part of its plot.
