Beautiful Ohio is a 2006 American comedy-drama film directed by Chimene S. Irwin, based on the novel Beautiful Ohio by Eileen Pollack. The story follows the Karger family, a dysfunctional Jewish-American family living in suburban Ohio during the 1970s. The film focuses particularly on two teenage brothers, Simon and William, whose very different personalities and ambitions create tension within the family. Their lives are further complicated by their parents' strained relationship and the family's attempts to cope with adolescence, sexuality, identity, and changing social expectations.
The film combines dark humor and family drama, portraying the awkwardness and emotional instability of adolescence against the cultural background of the 1970s. Its central themes include family relationships, brotherhood, alienation, coming of age, and personal identity. Rather than presenting a conventional teenage story, Beautiful Ohio uses the Kargers' eccentric family dynamics to explore how young people struggle to understand themselves while dealing with complicated parents and social pressures.
