Partial Differential Equations [Gockenbach]
#1
Partial Differential Equations: Analytical and Numerical Methods, 2nd Edition by Mark S. Gockenbach is an undergraduate introduction to partial differential equations that combines classical analytical techniques with modern numerical methods. The book begins with mathematical modeling of physical processes such as heat flow, diffusion, vibrations, and mechanical equilibrium, then develops the necessary linear algebra and ordinary differential equations. It proceeds to boundary-value problems, the heat and wave equations, first-order PDEs and the method of characteristics, Green’s functions, and Sturm–Liouville eigenvalue problems.

A central feature is the parallel treatment of Fourier analysis and finite element methods. Fourier series are used to represent solutions through orthogonal eigenfunctions, while finite element methods provide practical numerical approximations, particularly for boundary-value problems and multidimensional PDEs. The later chapters extend these techniques to two- and three-dimensional problems and discuss convergence and implementation. The second edition also includes MATLAB, Mathematica, and Maple tutorials, realistic physical examples, and expanded material on characteristics, Sturm–Liouville problems, Green’s functions, and finite differences.
