FlashFractals is a desktop educational and generative-art application by Roald Håkon Vatne for exploring the Mandelbrot and Julia sets interactively. Users can zoom deeply into fractal structures, move around the complex plane, choose among 20 Julia-set starting parameters, alter colour palettes and colour shifts, and increase the number of iterations to reveal finer mathematical detail. The program can export images in PNG, PPM, or JPG, including resolutions up to 48 megapixels / 8K width, making it useful both for mathematical exploration and for producing fractal artwork.
A particularly interesting feature is the ability to save the exact mathematical state—including coordinates and exploration history—as a text file, allowing a particular fractal location to be reproduced and shared with others. The software is written in Python, with the author reporting substantial AI-assisted optimization of the Julia/Mandelbrot calculations; one reported benchmark reduced a 1900×1425 Mandelbrot calculation at 1,500 iterations per pixel from about 60 seconds to approximately 0.3 seconds. The current version supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, including ARM64 Linux, and the project explicitly identifies itself as AI-assisted.
