The Net (1995) is a technology thriller directed by Irwin Winkler and starring Sandra Bullock as Angela Bennett, a freelance systems analyst whose life is almost entirely digital. Angela receives a mysterious floppy disk containing a hidden backdoor into a security system called Gatekeeper, which is used by corporations and government agencies. After her colleague Dale dies in a suspicious plane crash, Angela travels to Mexico, where she encounters Jack Devlin, an assassin trying to obtain the disk. When Angela survives an attack and returns home, she discovers that her digital identity has been erased: her records, credit cards, home, and personal information have been altered, while her Social Security number has been assigned to another woman with a criminal record.
Angela gradually discovers that the attack is part of a cyberterrorist conspiracy involving the Praetorians and the company behind Gatekeeper. The conspirators deliberately create computer failures and then exploit them to sell security software that secretly gives them continued unauthorized access to systems. Using her technical knowledge, Angela investigates the conspiracy, exposes the connection between the hackers and the software company, and sends evidence to the FBI. She ultimately destroys the Gatekeeper system and manages to restore her identity and life, while the main conspirators are exposed and arrested.
The film's central theme is the vulnerability of personal identity in an increasingly computerized society—a particularly striking idea for a movie released in 1995, when widespread dependence on the Internet was still emerging.
