War Games [1983]
#1
WarGames is a 1983 American techno-thriller directed by John Badham and starring Matthew Broderick as David Lightman, a teenage computer hacker. David accidentally connects through his modem to WOPR, a secret U.S. military supercomputer designed to simulate and manage nuclear war. Thinking he has discovered a computer game, he begins playing Global Thermonuclear War, unknowingly causing the military to interpret the simulation as a genuine Soviet nuclear attack. As WOPR continues generating increasingly realistic scenarios, the situation threatens to escalate into World War III.

The film ultimately focuses on the dangers of automation, artificial intelligence, computer security, and nuclear deterrence. David and scientist Stephen Falken realize that WOPR cannot distinguish between simulation and reality, and they teach it through repeated tic-tac-toe games that some conflicts have no meaningful winner. WOPR eventually recognizes the logic of mutual assured destruction and concludes that nuclear war is a game in which “the only winning move is not to play.”WarGames became culturally influential for bringing hacking, personal computers, cybersecurity, and the risks of computerized military systems to a mass audience.
