21 (2008) is a heist drama film directed by Robert Luketic and inspired by the story of the MIT Blackjack Team, as portrayed in Ben Mezrich’s book Bringing Down the House. The story follows Ben Campbell, a brilliant MIT mathematics student who hopes to attend Harvard Medical School but needs money for tuition. His mathematics professor, Micky Rosa, recruits him into a secret team of students trained in blackjack card counting.

By using probability, memory, mathematical analysis, and coded signals, the team gains an advantage at Las Vegas casinos and begins making large amounts of money. Ben initially sees the activity as a way to finance his education, but he becomes increasingly attracted to the wealth, gambling, and high-stakes lifestyle.

As Ben becomes more deeply involved, his academic responsibilities, friendships, and judgment begin to deteriorate. A major loss creates conflict with Micky, while casino security officer Cole Williams starts pursuing the team. Ben eventually realizes that Micky has manipulated and exploited the students for his own benefit. In the final confrontation, Ben and his teammates use their mathematical skills and deception to turn the tables on Micky, while Williams captures him.

The film ultimately combines mathematics, probability, psychology, gambling, ambition, and deception, presenting card counting as a contest between the students' ability to recognize statistical patterns and the casinos' attempts to detect and stop them. Although inspired by real events, the film takes considerable creative liberties with the actual MIT Blackjack Team story.
