The Circle (2017) - mklabgr - 09-28-2026 The Circle (2017) is a techno-thriller directed by James Ponsoldt, based on Dave Eggers’ novel. The story follows Mae Holland, played by Emma Watson, who gets a job at The Circle, a powerful technology and social-media company. The company promotes total connectivity, transparency and surveillance, introducing tiny cameras called SeeChange that can record virtually everything in real time. Mae becomes increasingly enthusiastic about the company's philosophy and eventually agrees to become “completely transparent,” broadcasting her life to the public 24 hours a day. As Mae embraces radical transparency, the distinction between privacy and public life gradually disappears. Her actions damage her relationships and contribute to the death of her friend Mercer after Circle users track him down. Mae eventually turns the company's own philosophy against its leaders, demanding that executives themselves become fully transparent. The film explores questions about digital surveillance, social media, privacy, corporate power, online conformity and the dangers of voluntary oversharing. Although the film received generally negative critical reviews, some critics considered its warning about social-media surveillance and the erosion of privacy particularly relevant. FILM |
