Blackhat is a 2015 American action-thriller directed by Michael Mann, starring Chris Hemsworth, Tang Wei, Viola Davis and Wang Leehom. The story follows Nick Hathaway, a highly skilled but imprisoned hacker who is temporarily released to help American and Chinese authorities investigate a series of sophisticated cyberattacks. The attacks initially target a nuclear power plant in Hong Kong and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, but investigators discover that they are connected to a much larger international criminal operation. Nick works with Chinese cybersecurity specialists and FBI agents, following digital clues across Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Jakarta to identify the attackers.
The film combines cybercrime, international espionage, financial manipulation and physical action, presenting hacking as something capable of producing real-world consequences rather than merely stealing information. Its title comes from “black hat” hacker, a term for someone who uses hacking for malicious or illegal purposes. Blackhat was notable for its attempt to portray modern cybersecurity and digital warfare, with elements inspired by real-world incidents such as Stuxnet.
